Golden Hour Family Photography: Tips for the Perfect Outdoor Session in SW London

What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the period roughly one hour before sunset when the sun sits low in the sky, casting a warm, soft, and incredibly flattering light. It's the single best time of day for outdoor family photography, creating that dreamy, glowing quality you see in magazine-worthy family portraits.
When Is Golden Hour in Surrey & SW London?
The exact timing varies throughout the year:
- Summer (June–August): Around 7:30–8:30pm — perfect for after-tea sessions
- Autumn (September–November): Around 4:30–6:00pm — great for catching the autumn colour
- Spring (March–May): Around 6:00–7:30pm — lovely with blossom and new greenery
- Winter (December–February): Around 3:00–4:00pm — earlier but beautifully soft and low
I'll always advise on the best timing for your specific session date and location.
What to Wear for Golden Hour
Golden light is warm-toned, so earthy, neutral, and warm colours photograph beautifully:
- Creams, tans, mustards, and rusts look stunning
- Soft pastels and muted tones work well too
- Colour-coordinate (don't match exactly) within a palette
- Avoid neon colours, busy patterns, and large logos
What About Toddlers and Young Children?
I know what you're thinking — golden hour can be dangerously close to bedtime! The good news is that sessions only last 45–60 minutes, and my approach is playful and relaxed. We'll let the kids run, explore, and be themselves. Some of the most beautiful family photos happen when everyone stops trying to pose.
Best Golden Hour Locations Near Kingston
I photograph families across Kingston upon Thames, Richmond, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Surbiton, and wider Surrey and South West London. Some of my favourite golden hour spots include Richmond Park, Bushy Park, and the Thames towpath — all offering gorgeous natural backdrops.
