The 5 Best Locations for Outdoor Family Photography in Surrey & SW London

Family playing together during an outdoor photography session at golden hour in Surrey

1. Richmond Park, Richmond

With its ancient oak trees, roaming deer, and endless golden light, Richmond Park is one of my favourite locations for family sessions, offering beautiful backdrops year-round. It's just a short drive from Kingston upon Thames.

2. Bushy Park, Hampton

Bushy Park offers a more intimate feel than Richmond Park, with stunning avenues of chestnut trees and wildflower meadows. The Woodland Gardens are especially beautiful for family portraits. Easily accessible from Hampton, Teddington, and Twickenham.

3. The Thames Towpath, Kingston

The riverside walk along the Thames in Kingston upon Thames provides a charming urban-meets-nature backdrop. Weeping willows, the old bridge, and riverside meadows create wonderfully varied scenery for family photos.

4. Claremont Landscape Garden, Esher

This National Trust gem near Esher offers beautifully manicured gardens, a serene lake, and mature trees — perfect for families who want a more formal, stately setting. The autumn colours here are extraordinary.

5. Wimbledon Common

Wimbledon Common is a vast, wild space with ancient woodland, open grasslands, and the famous windmill. It's ideal for adventurous families with toddlers who love to explore. The light filtering through the trees creates a magical atmosphere.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Family

I'm always happy to suggest the best location based on your family's personality and the time of year. As a family photographer covering Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, and South West London, I know these spots intimately and can find the perfect backdrop for your family portraits.

Golden hour — the hour before sunset — provides the most beautiful, warm light for outdoor sessions. I'll advise on the best timing for your chosen location and season.
